Defendant given time served for multiple felonies charges

A Minot man who pleaded guilty to multiple felony and misdemeanor charges in separate Ward County and Bottineau County cases has been sentenced to time served, probation and has been required to register as a sex offender.

Joshua D. Campbell, 20, Minot Air Force Base, previously entered a change of plea in North Central District Court in the Ward County case in July, pleading guilty to one count of violation of an order prohibiting contact and one count of corruption of a minor-victim 15 or older-defendant under 22, both Class A misdemeanors; and promoting a sexual performance by a minor, a Class B felony.

Campbell entered a change of plea Northeast District Court in the Bottineau County case on Dec. 10, pleading guilty to a second count of promoting a sexual performance by a minor, a Class B felony; and one count of possession of certain materials prohibited, a Class C felony. Two Class A misdemeanor counts of false information to law enforcement and harboring a runaway minor were dismissed in accordance with a plea agreement.

According to court documents, a Bureau of Criminal Investigation agent investigated a report received by the Bottineau County Sheriff’s Office of a runaway minor on Nov. 21, 2024. The victim’s father reported he had recently discovered the victim was in a relationship with Campbell and had forbidden Campbell from seeing the victim again after he discovered he had lied about being 17.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, investigators extracted a number of messages, images and videos from Campbell’s and the victim’s cell phones, detailing their relationship. The victim and Campbell were eventually located on Nov. 27, 2024, at a southwest Minot address, and Campbell was arrested and charged on Jan. 29, 2025.

District Court Judges Richard Hagar and Anthony Benson ordered identical concurrent sentences for all the charges – 360 days in the Ward County and Bottineau County Jails, to first serve 329 days with credit for 329 days already served. Campbell was ordered to complete two years of supervised probation and have no contact with the victim, along with maintaining a 150 foot distance. Campbell also was assessed a total of $1,875 in court fines and fees in both cases.
