City offers free disposal of holiday trash, trees
The City of Minot announced it will offer free dumping at the City Landfill to its sanitation customers between Dec. 22 and Jan. 3 to help dispose of household waste that could accumulate during the holidays.
Residents receiving city sanitation services can dispose of trash at the landfill free of charge during the holidays by bringing a current water bill for verification. Residents should separate recyclable materials from non-recyclable items. Attendants at the landfill scale will direct them to the proper locations to drop off both types of items.
Wrapping paper, extension cords and Christmas lights are not recyclable and should be placed in residential garbage containers.
The city also announced the landfill will be open on Wednesday, Dec. 24, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but will be closed on Dec. 25, Dec. 26, and Jan. 1. The landfill will resume normal hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, and then again on Friday, Jan. 2.
There will be no residential garbage collection on Dec. 25, with a makeup collection on Wednesday, Dec. 24. Residents with Tuesday/Friday collection will have garbage collected on Friday, Dec. 26. There will also be no garbage collection on Jan. 1 with a makeup collection on Wednesday, Dec. 31. All other garbage and recycling collections will run as scheduled.
Between Monday, Dec. 22, and Friday, Jan. 16, the city will provide designated dumpsters at two locations to help its sanitation customers dispose of real Christmas trees. The dumpsters will be at Site 7, located at 16th Street and 16th Avenue Southwest, and at Site 3, located at 11th Street and 4th Avenue Northwest (Oak Park). The dumpsters will have signs to identify them as being only for real Christmas trees. All stands, lights, ornaments and bags must be removed from the trees before disposal.
The city also will use a separate truck to pick up discarded real Christmas trees that are placed near residential garbage/recycling carts.
