Williston college reports enrollment growth

WILLISTON – Williston State College reports another semester of record-breaking enrollment, continuing a trend of growth.

As of the official Sept. 22 census day, WSC recorded 1,175 students, an 11% increase from last year and the highest fall headcount in the college’s history. Full-time equivalent enrollment also rose to 790 students, a 3% increase from fall 2024, the college reported.

Freshman enrollment reached 787 students, an 8.7% increase and more than 60 students above the previous record set last year. The college also saw unprecedented growth in its dual credit program, which allows high school students to earn college credits while completing their diploma. This fall, 386 students are enrolled in dual credit courses, marking a 46% increase and the highest number in WSC history.

“These record numbers highlight the momentum we continue to see at Williston State,” said WSC President Dr. Bernell Hirning. “Students are choosing to stay in North Dakota, or come here from surrounding states, because they see the opportunities available to them through our programs, our partnerships and the support of our community.”

Hirning noted that the growth comes even before the launch of WSC’s new healthcare training facility and expanded co-matriculation agreements with four-year universities. The healthcare facility set to open later this fall, and the first three programs of certified medical assistant, emergency medical technician (EMT) and phlebotomy launch in January. Additional co-matriculation partnerships with Dickinson State, Mayville State, Valley City State, and Minot State will allow students to seamlessly transition from WSC to bachelor’s degree programs while remaining in Williston.

“Reaching new milestones is exciting, but what it really shows is that more students and families recognize the value of starting here,” Hirning said. “With new programs and pathways on the horizon, the potential for growth is significant, and we are committed to supporting every student who chooses WSC.”
