Veterans Stand Down set for Oct. 16
The 14th annual North Central Veterans Stand Down is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Armed Forces Reserve Center, 3420 2nd St. NE, north of the Minot International Airport.
The event is held to reach out to veterans of north central North Dakota. Services provided will include veterans benefits, health care, legal services, counseling, housing assistance, hygiene items, flu shots and employment assistance. Veterans should bring their DD214, VA card or drivers license with “V” designation as proof of veteran status, if possible. Lunch will be served.
According to Veterans Stand Down information, the original Stand Down for Veterans was modeled after a concept used during the Vietnam War to provide a safe retreat for units returning from combat operations. At secure base camp areas, troops were able to take care of personal hygiene, get clean uniforms, enjoy warm meals, receive medical and dental care, mail and receive letters, and enjoy the camaraderie of friends in a safe environment. Stand Down’s afforded battle-weary soldiers the opportunity to renew their spirit, health and overall sense of well-being.
