WHITE SHIELD – Members of the Three Affiliated Tribes Business Council met Friday, Oct. 10, with the architect of a proposed new casino in White Shield to tour the project currently under construction.

The casino is not close to opening, but DSGW architect Erik Wedge provided digital images to help imagine a completed building. Wedge said the building is an open canvas at this point, enabling recommended changes to be incorporated yet as work continues.

MHA Nation announced plans for the Son of Star casino in September 2023. According to information released at the time and reported in The Minot Daily News, the 37,000-square-foot casino, set to open in 2026 just south of the powwow grounds, would be designed to reflect the culture and traditions of MHA Nation. Plans called for 230 slot machines, six table games, a sports book, poker room, restaurant, gift shop, campground and coffee shop. Future phases could include a convenience store, hotel and event center.

Tribal council members participating in last Friday’s meeting were Chairman Mark Fox; Executive Secretary Fred Fox, White Shield, East Segment; Dr. Monica Mayer, New Town, North Segment; and Robert White, New Town, Four Bears Segment; and their staff members.

Joining them were East Segment Sahnish Development Authority (SDA) Board CEO Fred Everett, and Vice President Denile Henry. The SDA Board was created to help generate economic growth for White Shield. The board was instrumental in bringing the Old #8 diner to White Shield last year.

Following the site tour, the group met over lunch at the diner to consider feasibility studies, projected costs and possible additions.
