Program of music, dialogue set for Minot State

Yehuda Hanani

The Minot State University Department of Fine and Performing Arts will host an immersive weekend of music and dialogue with cellist, teacher and speaker Yehuda Hanani, faculty member at The New School, Mannes in New York City, Friday, Oct. 10-Saturday, Oct. 11.

The program, “When Sound Becomes Meaning,” explores the relationship between language and music. Chorales, spirituals, songs and dances will be highlighted through performances by Hanani, guest participants, and MSU faculty and students.

“Yehuda is brilliant; a force of positivity and for seeking deeper understanding. I owe a great deal of who I am as a musician and teacher to the years spent with him and am so excited that he will be here to share his experiences and wisdom. Don’t miss this,” said Erik Anderson, Minot State professor of music.

The opening session on Friday will be held in Hartnett Hall Recital and Lecture Hall at 7 p.m., with discussion led by Hanani and Anderson. A reception will follow.

Saturday’s events will include a group reading session in Ann Nicole Nelson Hall at 9:30 a.m. Harnett Hall Recital and Lecture Hall will be the site for the solo masterclass from 10:40 a.m.-noon; discussion at 2 p.m., ensemble masterclass at 3 p.m., and final concert at 6:30 p.m., featuring Hanani, MSU faculty and workshop participants with a reception to follow.

The weekend program is free for MSU students, faculty and staff. Seating for the Friday evening session and masterclasses is limited, and registration guarantees a place. To register, visit the MSU Division of Performing Arts website.
