Law enforcement seeks suspect in incident at Spirit Lake Reservation
FORT TOTTEN – The Spirit Lake Tribe and Bureau of Indian Affairs Fort Totten Police Department announced they, with partner agencies, continue to investigate a Thursday, Oct. 2, incident near St. Michael after making contact with one of two suspects.
The suspect is cooperating with investigators, according to law enforcement. The second suspect, Winfield Chaske III, remained at large Friday, Oct. 3, and has active warrants in both tribal and state courts.
The tribe reported no current threat exists to the public but asked residents to contact law enforcement if encountering Chaske.
The Spirit Lake Tribe and police had previously issued a public safety update, urging residents to keep windows, doors and vehicles secure and remain vigilant.
At about 6:53 p.m. on Oct. 2, BIA Law Enforcement received a call from Lake Region Dispatch notifying them of a stolen vehicle in Devils Lake. At about 7:03 p.m., a BIA officer arrived on the scene of a single-vehicle crash within the boundaries of the Spirit Lake Reservation near St. Michael. A search involving multiple agencies was conducted for two men.
