Granville residents report political vandalism

A flagpole lies on the ground at a Granville home following a reported vandalism on Thursday, Oct. 16.
GRANVILLE – Two flags and a flagpole were torn down and pumpkins smashed in what appeared to be politically motivated vandalism in Granville Thursday, Oct. 16.
Andrew Allis of Granville said he found his six pumpkins smashed and his neighbor’s Trump flag crumpled on his front step. The vandal had pulled down his neighbor’s Trump flag and leveled its flagpole as well as taking down the neighbor’s American flag, he said.
Allis, who had displayed pro-Trump and other political banners for several months on his property earlier this year, said pumpkins belonging to another neighbor, who has not displayed political items, were not touched.
The incident, which happened at about 10 p.m., was captured on home surveillance video, he said.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office confirmed receiving a report of the incident Friday morning and noted the case is under investigation.

Allis said political vandalism needs to be taken seriously because it will escalate, creating increasing levels of harm, as seen nationally.
“It’s political violence,” he said of Thursday’s small-town vandalism incident. “It’s a microcosm of what’s happening nationally. It’s scary stuff, and it needs to stop.”
He added he plans to put out double the pumpkins and rehang his Trump banner in response to the vandalism.
