Enforcement cites 665 drivers for distracted driving
Law enforcement agencies issued 665 citations during the September Put the Phone Away or Pay distracted driving enforcement campaign, according to the North Dakota Department of Transportation.
Of the citations, 367 were issued for distracted driving. Additional citations included 112 for speeding, 79 for other traffic citations such as disobeying traffic signals and equipment violations, 35 for failure to wear a seat belt and 12 for driving with a suspended/revoked license. Two individuals were arrested for driving under the influence during the campaign, along with two other drug-related arrests.
The release from the NDDOT stated the purpose of high visibility enforcement such as Put the Phone Away or Pay is to deter dangerous driving behaviors and encourage drivers to take personal responsibility for their safety and the safety of others.
