Alzheimer’s Association offers education courses

GRAND FORKS – The Alzheimer’s Association will offer free virtual presentations for the public, first responders and law enforcement in November.

“Responding to Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias: Law Enforcement and First Responders” will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 4, from 10 a.m.-noon. This presentation is free and open to those in law enforcement and first responders.

The training will provide practical and easy-to-understand considerations when working with people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias. This live, premier training for law enforcement and first responders is co-sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association and N.D. Department of Human Services.

The Alzheimer’s Association will offer a free virtual webinar, “The Empowered Caregiver: Supporting Independence,” on Wednesday, Nov. 5, from 2-3:30 p.m.

The class is designed to increase caregiver confidence while reducing stress. Supporting Independence focuses on helping the person living with dementia participate in daily activities, providing the right amount of support, and balancing safety and independence while managing expectations.

The Alzheimer’s Association will offer a free virtual presentation, “The Empowered Caregiver: Communicating Effectively,” on Monday, Nov. 10, from noon-1 p.m.

The class offers helpful ways to approach the responsibilities of caring for someone living with dementia using a person-centered approach. It teaches how dementia affects communication, including tips for communicating well with family, friends, and healthcare professionals.

The projects are funded through the North Dakota Department of Health & Human Services, Adult & Aging Services Section. Registration is required by contacting the Alzheimer’s Association Minnesota-Dakota Chapter.
