Wold Engineering honors Indvik, 70 years of business
Wold Engineering, P.C. is thrilled to celebrate our 70th anniversary and celebrate Don Indvik.
Founded in 1955 by Peter B. Wold in Bottineau, Wold Engineering Company began as a consulting engineering firm. Our founding philosophy was to build a better engineering firm by treating our clients as partners, fostering lifelong relationships, and providing an environment for continuous development and success. These core values proved successful, leading to rapid growth as Mr. Wold hired employees who shared this vision.
Thus, in 1970, Wold Engineering Company had expanded and grown into what is now known as Wold Engineering, P.C., a professional corporation that provides consulting engineering and land surveying services. Peter Wold, Richard Foster and Don Indvik were the original owners and Board members of the new corporation. Shortly after incorporation, our company expanded by adding two branch offices in Minot and Bismarck.
We have been a part of the local communities in the area for seven decades, providing consulting engineering and land surveying services to many counties and cities throughout the state, as well as hundreds of clients in the private sector. Our headquarter office has been in Bottineau, North Dakota, since 1955 and still employs the majority of our staff.
We currently have on staff seven professional engineers, who hold licenses in North Dakota, Montana and Minnesota collectively, four professional land surveyors, nine civil and survey technicians and many support staff. We are privately owned and operated by six principals, who make up our current Board of Directors. These individuals hold professional engineering and land surveying titles and are involved with all the daily activities within the three offices including project management, office management, design and plan preparation as well as client relationships.
As we celebrate 70 years of success and partnerships in our community, we also celebrate those who came before us and provided the leadership and knowledge necessary to continue to grow our business. One of those past leaders was Don Indvik.
Don Indvik was a professional engineer and land surveyor, who began his career with Wold Engineering Company in 1962 as a young engineer. Don worked with many counties and cities throughout his career, providing engineering consulting services including project planning, design, plan development, budgeting, project management, client relations and company leadership. When the firm became a corporation in 1970, Don was appointed Vice President of the company. He continued in that position until 1986, when Peter Wold retired. Don then took over the role of President, a position that he held until his retirement in 2005.
During his tenure as president, Don oversaw many changes to the company. From drafting tables and survey chains to AutoCAD computer aided drafting and GPS, he helped guide the company to success. He served as a president of the North Dakota Association of County Engineers during his career. He was also selected as their Engineer of the Year in 1984. He saw the company grow from a handful of employees in the Bottineau office to a company that employs over 30 full-time and seasonal staff, in three locations throughout the state.
Even after his retirement, Don remained dedicated to ensuring the future of Wold Engineering, P.C. Whether by continuing to work in a part-time capacity, providing guidance to young engineers and surveyors, helping with design and plan preparation or maintaining relationships with the employees in all three offices both in a professional and social capacity. He would stop by the Bottineau office frequently, checking in on project progress and providing a wealth of knowledge to the young engineers and surveyors. His memory never seemed to dull; he could recall the names of most of the county commissioners he worked with over the years, specific details from many of his past projects and still complete all the math needed to calculate a curve radius in his head, humming while doing so.
Don was born in Willow City and attended high school there. Upon graduation, he attended the School of Forestry (now Dakota College), where he received an associate’s degree and then went on to obtain a Civil Engineering degree from NDSU in Fargo. Don was involved in the Bottineau community his entire life. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and was active in the church choir. He dedicated his time outside of work to the Bottineau Food Pantry, Bottineau Eagles Club, St. Andrew’s Hospital and Dakota College, as well as many other local organizations. He received the Golden Service award from the Dakota College Alumni Association in 2020, for his support of the college over the years since his attendance after high school graduation.
Don, and his wife, Gertie, made their home in Bottineau. They have two children, Kim and Kent. Kent currently serves as the President of Wold Engineering, P.C., and is the office manager of our Minot location, continuing in the footsteps of his father. Don passed away in 2024, after a long battle with cancer. He has been greatly missed by all of us here at Wold Engineering, P.C.. We continue to strive to maintain the legacy he and his partners built, ensuring a bright future for our company.
The company mission statement, “Turning Vision into Reality Since 1955,” has never rung truer. It speaks about our longevity as well as the innovative thinking and creativity of our employees, past and present. We are honored to celebrate 70 years of business, partnerships and innovation, while honoring our mentor, Don, and we look forward to what the future brings in the next 70 years.
