Texas man sentenced for hotel hostage incident in March
A Texas man charged in connection with a March hostage situation at a Minot hotel has been sentenced after entering a change of plea to guilty.
O’Nyame Shavaru Moore, 24, Spring, Texas, entered a change of plea in North Central District Court on Tuesday, Sept. 9, pleading guilty to five Class C felonies, including aggravated assault-dangerous weapon, terrorizing-with a dangerous weapon-adult victim, terrorizing-adult victim, felonious restraint-adult victim and child neglect-parental neglect. A Class A felony count of attempted murder and Class C felony counts of child neglect and aggravated assault-adult victim were dismissed in accordance with a plea agreement.
According to a release from the Minot Police Department, officers were dispatched to a northwest Minot hotel on March 13 for a report of a person being held hostage. Upon arrival, officers located Moore holding a knife against a female victim while making threats to cause her harm. Moore eventually complied with commands and released the victim without any apparent significant injury and was taken into custody. According to the release, Moore left two young children unattended at his residence during the incident.
District Judge Stacey Louser sentenced Moore to a concurrent sentence across all five counts of five years with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Three years of the sentence will be suspended pending the completion of five years of supervised probation once he is released in two years. Moore was ordered to have no contact with the victims and to complete a parenting class while incarcerated. He also was assessed $525 in court fines and fees.
