by Karen LoneFight a chicken dancer who also competes in the cowboy dances at powwows, lives in Bismarck and spends summers in White Shield. The chicken dance is a complex dance emulating prairie chickens, with dancers showing off their athleticism and the art of the dance. These dancers have to tell a story with their movements.Ryder was among many dancers at the Little Shell Celebration held in early August west of New Town.

NEW TOWN – The Little Shell Celebration is the largest MHA Nation (Three Affiliated Tribes) outdoor celebration on Fort Berthold Reservation.

Traditionally, Little Shell, held at the Little Shell Antelope Society Arbor, west of New Town, brings to an end the season of outdoor celebrations.

Other celebrations during the summer months are held in each segment of the reservation.

The traditional powwows bring together families and friends to celebrate and honor their history and culture.
