Former Devils Lake officer faces terrorizing charge

DEVILS LAKE – A former Devils Lake police officer has been charged with terrorizing related to an incident this past week that ended with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police Officer Rey Hennen’s employment with the department has been terminated, the department stated in a recent news release.

According to information originally released, the Devils Lake Police Department officers were dispatched at around 11 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, to a residence for a report of a 911 hang up call. An investigation was initiated, and a search warrant was obtained and executed. In the attempt to execute the search warrant, the subject, an off-duty officer, barricaded himself inside the home with a weapon.

Law officers removed children from the home and evacuated the area or had neighbors shelter in place during the incident.

Personnel with the Devils Lake Police Department and Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office negotiated with the officer for several hours. An arrest warrant for terrorizing, a Class C felony, was issued by the Ramsey County State’s Attorney’s Office. As the police department attempted to arrest Hennen shortly after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, Hennen sustained the gunshot wound.

He was arrested and transported to a Devils Lake hospital for a non-life-threatening injury.

The police department reports the investigation is ongoing by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Starting at $2.99/week.
