Spirit Lake Tribal Council responds to charges against sheriff’s deputy

FORT TOTTEN — The Spirit Lake Tribal Council has released a statement addressing the recent charges against a former deputy sheriff with the Benson County Sheriff’s Office.

Based on court records, Travis Lee Carlson has been charged with three counts of tampering with public records-false entry-public servant, a Class C felony; four counts of official oppression-unlawful arrest, two counts of public servant refusing to perform duty, and one count of failure to appear as witness or produce information, all Class A misdemeanors; and three counts of disorderly conduct-harassment, a Class B misdemeanors.

In the statement, the Spirit Lake Tribal Council said the charges against Carlson represent serious allegations of abuse of authority that can undermine community trust in law enforcement. The council assured its members it is aware of and is actively monitoring the situation, and would provide updates as the matter develops. The council condemned the actions alleged against Carlson, but affirmed all individuals are entitled to due process and the right to a fair trial.

“We must listen to the stories of our tribal members and prioritize their safety within our reservation boundaries,” stated Tribal Chairwoman Lonna Jackson-Street. “This moment serves as a reminder that accountability is essential in maintaining trust within our community. We stand in solidarity with those affected and encourage all members to report any incidents or concerns to our Spirit Lake Victim Services.”

The council advised community members who have experienced misconduct or have concerns to contact Spirit Lake Victim Impact Services at 766-1816 or the Fort Totten Police Department at 766-4231.

“This situation also serves as a reminder of the broader challenges our people face. Statistics show that more than 4 in 5 American Indian and Alaska Native women have experienced violence in their lifetime, often at the hands of non-Native perpetrators. This reality underscores the urgent need for responsive law enforcement and robust community support systems.

The Spirit Lake Tribal Council remains steadfast in our commitment to fostering a safe, accountable, and supportive environment for all,” the council’s statement concluded.
