Spirit Lake nurse recognized as immunization champion

FORT TOTTEN – Sarah O’Connell, immunization nurse with the Spirit Lake Early Childhood Tracking Program, has been recognized as North Dakota’s 2025 CDC Childhood Immunization Champion, the Spirit Lake Tribe announced.
The annual award, presented by the Association of Immunization Managers in partnership with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), honors leaders across the nation who demonstrate excellence in promoting vaccinations and preventing disease.
Through her work at Spirit Lake Early Childhood Tracking, O’Connell conducts developmental screenings and immunization checks; offers culturally sensitive education and referrals for well-child visits, dental care and behavioral health; coordinates transportation to medical appointments; and leads outreach, including mobile clinics and partnerships with schools and Head Start programs.
Last year, Spirit Lake Early Childhood Tracking provided more than 250 nursing visits, 170 Health Tracks assessments and more than 140 transportation rides for families.
