Seafood, music, fundraising featured at Double-D Haw

Double-D Haw, billed as Minot’s biggest breast cancer fundraiser, will be back for the fourth year on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 5-11 p.m. at The Blue Rider in downtown Minot.

Double-D Haw was co-founded by ShaunAnne Tangney, a retired English professor who taught at Minot State University for 20 years and has long been active in the community. Tangney said she’s committed to keeping the event going.

“Technology is always changing. The needs are always there. Breast cancer is not cured, so we’re not going anywhere,” Tangney said.

The fundraiser began when Tangney, Ryan Ackerman, Terry Peterson and Josh Wolsky were brainstorming events to host at The Blue Rider. Ackerman suggested a seafood boil, originally called “Sea-Haw” to match the bar’s cowboy theme. The idea evolved into Double-D Haw, a breast cancer fundraiser.

“The seafood boil at Double-D Haw is fast becoming legendary,” said Blue Rider owner Terry Peterson.

“There aren’t many seafood boils as a fundraiser in North Dakota that I am aware of. This is one reason it is such a unique event,” Tangney said.

After the first year’s cold October weather, organizers moved the date to September. Since inception, the event has raised about $50,000 for breast cancer awareness and advanced breast care at Trinity Health, with all funds staying local. The totals have grown each year — from $8,500 in the first year to $15,000, and then $25,000 last year. Organizers hope to reach $50,000 this year. All proceeds will support new and advanced breast cancer detection and treatment technology at Trinity Health.

“We’re honored that Double-D Haw continues to be such a great partner in the fight against breast cancer,” said Dusty Zimmerman, director of the Trinity Health Foundation.

The evening will feature an authentic seafood boil prepared by Ackerman, a live auction and music. Atypical Brewing and Barrelworks has partnered with the fundraiser all four years to raise additional funds through September.

The street in front of The Blue Rider will be closed to traffic for the event to make room for tables, chairs and a street dance featuring live funk from Little Chicago Funk. A newly added after-party will feature the band Mythtickle from Hebron, playing into the early hours. New this year is a 50/50 paddle game and a small live auction.

“We don’t run a big auction, but there will be some cool, very Double-D Haw-themed items, Tangney said. “Think: Blue Rider deck parties, Walter Piehl paintings, Bloody Mary survival kits, book koozies.”

In keeping with the tradition, the exterior of The Blue Rider will be decorated with bras.

“It’s Minot’s best selfie spot for the month of September,” Tangney said. “Come on down to the Blue, snap a selfie, post it, tag us and help kick breast cancer’s butt.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
