NDPOA honors outstanding service

Chris Myers
Aaron Hummel
Garrett Norsten

DICKINSON — The North Dakota Peace Officers Association presented its most prestigious honors to three individuals for their exceptional service and dedication to public safety at its 114th annual conference in Dickinson earlier in August.

According to NDPOA information, recently retired North Dakota Highway Patrol Major Aaron Hummel and retired assistant United States Attorney Christopher Meyers were each presented with the Lone Eagle Award. The Lone Eagle Award is presented annually to active or retired peace officers who in the eyes of their comrades have contributed guidance, inspiration and support throughout their careers. The award was created in 1979 by retired FBI agent Herb Eckenroth, who worked in North Dakota for many years, to recognize a North Dakota Peace Officer who “…has shown incorruptible soundness or moral character and faithful adherence to ethical principles.”

Officer Garrett Norsten of the Williston Police Department was named the 2025 North Dakota Peace Officer of the Year, the highest honor given by the NDPOA. The award is awarded to officers based upon outstanding service, professional dignity and unselfish personal contributions to the citizens of North Dakota.

“These award recipients represent the best of North Dakota law enforcement,” said NDPOA President Dustin Olson. “Their commitment to duty and their communities stands as a model for all who serve in this profession.”
