Man sentenced for two counts of attempted murder

A Minot man who pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder has been sentenced to serve a suspended sentence of 10 years with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Troy Edward Sanders, 35, Minot, appeared in North Central District Court on Thursday, Aug. 28, for sentencing, after entering a change of plea in May to guilty on two counts of Class A felony attempted murder-intentional or knowing. One of the counts involved an adult victim and the other involved a child victim.

In accordance with a plea agreement, one Class B felony count of child abuse; one count of domestic violence-serious bodily injury, four counts of terrorizing-child victim, all Class C felonies; and one count of criminal mischeif, a Class A misdemeanor, were dismissed in accordance with a plea agreement.

The charges against Sanders stemmed from a domestic incident in September 2024, when he reportedly choked both an adult victim and a child victim under the age of 5, according to court documents. A juvenile reported the incident to Central Dispatch, and Minot Police officers arrived at the scene to find Sanders assaulting the adult victim outside the home. According to court documents, a bystander jumped from a second-story balcony and intervened to stop the attack as officers approached and arrested Sanders.

Surrogate Judge Douglas Mattson sentenced Sanders to a 20-year suspended sentence for the count of attempted murder-intentional or knowing-adult victim, to be followed by five years of supervised probation.

Mattson sentenced Sanders to 20 years with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation with 10 years suspended for the count involving a child, to be served consecutively with the adult count. Sanders was also ordered to register as an offender against children, complete another five years of supervised probation, and to have no contact with the four victims. He was also assessed $525 in court fines and fees.
