Jury returns guilty verdicts in Garrison hotel shooting
A Garrison man was found guilty of multiple counts including attempted murder for charges stemming from a February incident at a Garrison hotel.
Jason Chamberlain, 45, was found guilty on all counts after a five day jury trial in McLean County in July, including attempted murder, a Class A felony; reckless endangerment, terrorizing, both Class C felonies; criminal mischief and discharge firearm within city limits, both Class B misdemeanors. Chamberlain previously entered a guilty plea to one Class C felony count of felon in possession of a firearm.
According to court documents, Chamberlain was charged after a report was made to the McLean County Sheriff’s Department that Chamberlain had fired a handgun inside the lobby of North Shore Inn in Garrison the evening of Feb. 28. The incident was captured on security footage, which showed Chamberlain entering the lobby with a 1911 pistol and firing a shot at a television and pointing the firearm at a hotel employee who was investigating the noise.
District Court Judge Bonnie Storbakken sentenced Chamberlain on the felon in possession of a firearm count to five years with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, with credit for 174 days already served. Storbakken ordered a concurrent sentence of 30 days with credit for 174 days already served for the criminal mischief and discharge of firearm within city limits charges.
Storbakken ordered a presentence investigation for the attempted murder, reckless engagement and terrorizing counts. A sentencing date has not been scheduled based on court records.
