A group of local volunteers has been quietly making a big impact behind the scenes behind the scenes of the North Dakota State Fair.
Members of Special Olympics of Minot have been pitching in throughout the week, helping clean up the fairgrounds during one of the city’s busiest times of year. With grabbers and garbage bags in hand, the group has been tackling litter and keeping the area tidy for the thousands of daily visitors.
Led by Renee Dufner, who serves as the team’s supervisor, the volunteer crew includes Skylar Tollefson, James Charley, Christy Coughlin, Brooke Vanzomeren and Tiffany Coutts.
“It’s important to us to be part of the community and give back however we can,” Dufner said. “The athletes and volunteers love being out here, and the fairgrounds staff has been so supportive. We’re happy to do our part.”
Volunteering at the fair has become a meaningful tradition for the Minot Special Olympics group. While their work may not be center stage, their presence certainly doesn’t go unnoticed.
“We take pride in showing people what we’re capable of,” Dufner added. “This is our way of showing that we care about our city and we want it to shine.”
