MSU Summer Theatre continues its 60th anniversary season with a special youth production of “Disney’s High School Musical Jr.,” opening Thursday.

Directed by Jacob Jenkins, the show features an energetic cast of local performers ages 11 to 18 who have spent nearly two weeks rehearsing with experienced theatre mentors to bring this beloved musical to life, according to MSU Summer Theatre information.

The production marks the debut of MSU Summer Theatre’s Musical Camp program, designed to give young actors a chance to shine in a full-scale show without the demands of late night performances.

“Summer Theatre strives to be as inclusive as possible, but the late night schedule can be hard on young performers,” Chad Gifford, artistic director, said. “We are excited to try a camp-style musical in an effort to give these budding actors a chance to shine without keeping them up past their bedtime!”

Audiences can expect all the catchy songs and favorite characters from the original Disney Channel hit, as Troy, Gabriella and their classmates shake up the “status quo” in this fun, high-energy show.

Performances run Thursday-Saturday, July beginning each night at 8:30 p.m.. The box office opens at 8 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 858-3228. The July 17 performance is already sold out, but overflow seating will be made available beginning at 8 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
