Minot AFB open house gives visitors glimpse of ongoing missions

Event set for June 14

B-52 Stratofortress

MINOT AIR FORCE BASE – Static displays, B-1 and B-52 flybys, aircraft munitions loading demonstration and more are part of Minot Air Force Base’s open house on Saturday, June 14.

There will not be an air show. Only the B-1 and B-52 fly-bys are scheduled.

The south gate will open to the public at 8 a.m., with the open house beginning at 9 a.m. and running until 4 p.m.

“The open house showcases what Minot AFB does with the 5th Bomb Wing and the 91st Missile Wing,” said Maj. Evan Pittman, director of Wing Plans for the 5th Bomb Wing’s Inspector General Office.

The bomb wing operates the B-52H bombers and the missile wing operates and maintains the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles in the Minot missile field.

Earlier, Pittman presented information about the open house to members of the Minot Area Chamber of Commerce EDC’s Military Affairs Committee.

“We are super excited. This is the first time in seven years that we are having this,” he said. The last open house at the base was held in 2018.

Numerous aircraft will be on display, many of them from other areas. They include: B-52 Stratofortress, UH-1 Huey, T-38 Talon, KC-135, T-6 Texan, P-51, E-11 BACN, F-15E, MC-130 and C-21, according to Minot AFB information.

Pittman said visitors to the base will be able to walk through a B-52 and see the inside of the plane.

Other static displays will include several 5th Bomb Wing aircraft munitions, loading demonstrations and 91st Missile Wing convoy static displays, including Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, Bear Cat, armored truck, traffic control vehicle and other trucks.

Precision Exotics will be at the open house offering the opportunity for those attending the event to drive, for a cost, some of the most exotic cars in the world, such as a Ferrari or a Lamborghini.

A Kid Zone will include bounce houses, games and robotics demonstrations.

Food and beverages will be available at food trucks and from organizations.

“So bring the kids, bring everybody,” Pittman said.
