Help available to stop smoking during Quit Week
Quit Week returns to North Dakota next week, June 8-14, and First District Health Unit is joining statewide partners to encourage residents to quit smoking, vaping, chew or nicotine pouches.
Throughout the week, individuals are encouraged to set a quit date and access the resources available to help them succeed. Support is available through NDQuits, healthcare providers, pharmacists and First District Health Unit. Personalized coaching and free nicotine replacement therapy are available, such as patches, gum or lozenges.
“As a former smoker, I can tell you that quitting isn’t easy, but it’s possible, and one of the best things you can do for yourself and your loved ones,” said Bonnie Riely, certified tobacco treatment specialist with First District Health Unit in a news release. “Anyone can tell you to quit, but we tell you how.”
To learn more, contact Riely at 837-5171, visit NDQuits at hhs.nd.gov/ndquits or call 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
Fifteen percent of North Dakota adults smoke, and tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death in North Dakota, contributing to roughly 1,000 deaths each year and driving more than $379 million in healthcare costs, the health unit stated. Products like cigarettes, vapes, chew, and nicotine pouches can lead to serious health issues, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and chronic respiratory conditions.
Quit Week, now in its sixth year, is a collaborative effort between Tobacco Free North Dakota, North Dakota Health and Human Services and local public health units.
