GARRISON – Fort Stevenson State Park will take visitors back in time when it hosts its 32nd annual Frontier Military Days on Saturday and Sunday, June 28 and 29. Activities will take place from noon-4 p.m. both days on the Guardhouse Interpretive Center lawn.
Back by popular demand, a stick horse rodeo will be held on Saturday from noon-2 p.m., with no early registration required.
In addition to traditional cannon firing at noon and 3:30 p.m. each day, visitors can enjoy entertainment presentations each afternoon followed by a free root beer float social on Saturday and free pie and ice cream on Sunday.
Visitors will have a chance to experience what life was like at an 1870s military fort. The military encampment features authentic tents and gear, living history demonstrations of tomahawk throwing, trader tent and black powder gun demonstrations. Skills and crafts of the Indian Wars period also will be on display.
Fort Stevenson Frontier Military Days is sponsored by the Fort Stevenson Foundation, a local volunteer organization that sponsored reconstruction of the original fort’s guardhouse. The Guardhouse Interpretive Center houses displays and artifacts about military life in the Dakota Territory.
The park, located three miles south of Garrison, charges a $7 vehicle entrance fee unless a state park annual pass is displayed.
