Council hears local funding requests

Minot’s base efforts will receive $600,000 from the state in the next biennium, according to Minot Area Chamber EDC.

Brekka Kramer, MACEDC president/CEO, relayed information about funding on the state level to the Minot City Council Monday in presenting the organization’s 2026 budget request.

MACEDC is seeking $559,650 for economic development and workforce, which is no change from this year. It is seeking $110,000, or a 3.5% increase from $106,250, for base efforts of Task Force 21.

Kramer said Minot received $850,000 from the state in 2023 to prepare for the impact coming with the future construction of Sentinel missile upgrade. However, Congres temporarily halted the Sentinel program to take a closer look. Last July, Congress moved the program forward again.

“Because we had a pause of strategic engagements and planning,” Kramer said, “some of those funds that we would have expended in Sentinel planning and preparation were really halted last year.”

She explained that although the amount of work is now increasing, MACEDC is being fiscally responsible in spending the carryover appropriation for Sentinel preparedness first, which reduces the amount of new money needed in the next biennium.

“So, we lowered our request for funding from the State of North Dakota this biennium,” she said.

MACEDC also receives funding from Ward County, private funds, sponsors, program fees and income from the Logistics Park and intermodal facility, Kramer said.

The council heard from other currently funded organizations with requests for the 2026 budget. Requests were $154,500 from Minot Commission on Aging, $327,000 from First District Health Unit, $40,000 from Minot Area Council of the Arts and $20,000 from Souris Basin Planning Council.

The council will be considering the requests as it drafts the city’s 2026 budget.

Starting at $2.99/week.
