Surrey prepares to celebrate 125 years

SURREY – The community of Surrey will be celebrating the 125th anniversary of the town’s founding on Saturday and Sunday, June 21-22, with a parade, 5K run, demolition derby and other activities.

According to a history documented in the Ward County centennial book, a sign stuck in the sod along the railroad tracks east of Minot before 1900 simply read “Surrey.” The townsite was surveyed in September 1894, but the first settlers did not arrive until 1900. Many came through the efforts of an immigration agent for the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railroad, later known as the Great Northern, which named the town.

The kickoff of the anniversary celebration is scheduled for 8 a.m. June 21 at Kraft Park, where the Surrey Park District will be starting its 5K run. Entrants should meet at the shelter by the park.

A parade begins at 10:30 a.m. Entrants can preregister at City Hall or enter on the day of the parade between 9:30-10:15 a.m. at the starting point in the parking lot of Hope Lutheran Church.

The parade will follow a route down Pleasant Avenue, to the ball diamonds and to Kraft Park, where vendors will be set up from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Other activities in the park include bounce castles and an obstacle course sponsored by the Good Neighbors Club and ice cream and other food trucks from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Silver Marshall Band will perform live music from 8 p.m.-12:30 a.m. at the ball diamonds. Tickets will be available at the gate.

Sunday’s events begin with a free-will pancake and sausage breakfast at the senior center from 8-11 a.m. Hope Lutheran will hold a special service at 10:30 a.m.

The Surrey Fire Department is sponsoring a demolition derby at the grounds south of town at 1 p.m.

For more information about any of the events, contact Surrey City Hall.

Starting at $2.99/week.
