Stolen vehicle, firearm recovered following pursuit over weekend
A stolen vehicle and stolen firearm were recovered following a brief pursuit early Sunday morning, according to Minot Police Department information.
Officers located a gray 2010 GMC Sierra in the 100 block of First Avenue Southwest around 1:27 a.m. The truck matched the description of a vehicle reportedly stolen in northwest Minot on March 18. The license plates displayed on the vehicle were registered to a different vehicle.
Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled through alleyways and side streets in downtown Minot near the Artspace Lofts, prompting a brief vehicle pursuit. The chase lasted approximately five blocks and ended when the suspect vehicle collided with the rear of an unoccupied, parked 2022 Chevrolet Malibu in the 10 block of First Street Southeast.
The driver and passenger fled on foot, but both were apprehended after two brief foot pursuits by Minot Police officers. The recovered pickup was confirmed to be the vehicle stolen in March. While processing the scene, officers also located a stolen handgun, which had been reported missing after an auto burglary on March 4 in southeast Minot.
The driver, Shane Camden Windham, 18, Minot, was charged with driving under suspension, driving with canceled/altered/revoked license plates or tabs, reckless driving, all Class B misdemeanors; leaving the scene of an accident involving an unattended vehicle, a Class A misdemeanor; possession of a stolen motor vehicle and fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle in commission of a felony, both Class C felonies.
The passenger, Ashton Martin Nelson, 19, Minot, was charged with refusal to halt-first offense, a Class B misdemeanor; possession of a stolen motor vehicle and possession of a stolen firearm, both Class C felonies.
Both individuals were transported to the Ward County Jail, where they remain in custody pending their initial court appearances. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
