Motel shooting suspect charged with attempted murder
A Garrison man previously charged in connection with a shooting incident at a Garrison motel in February now faces a new charge for attempted murder with a dangerous weapon.
Jason Sam Chamberlain, 45, Garrison, was originally charged on Feb. 28 in South Central District Court in McLean County with possession of a firearm by a felon, reckless endangerment, terrorizing, all Class C felonies; and two Class B misdemeanors of criminal mischief and discharge of a firearm in city limits.
According to the original affidavit of probable cause, Chamberlain is accused of entering the motel lobby and pushing items on the front desk to the ground before firing a pistol at a television in the lobby. The motel night clerk was in an apartment behind the front desk with his son, and reported that Chamberlain pointed the gun at him when he went to the front desk to investigate.
According to court records, Chamberlain was charged at the end of April with a Class A felony count of attempted murder with a firearm in connection with the incident.
The affidavit of probable cause indicates the new charge was brought after investigators further reviewed evidence and additional camera footage which showed after the victim exited his apartment behind the front desk, Chamberlain approached him in a shooting stance as the victim ran back into the apartment. Chamberlain was further recorded attempting to fire the handgun at the apartment door two times as he walked toward the motel’s exit, but the handgun didn’t fire.
Chamberlain is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the attempted murder charge on Tuesday, May 20. A jury trial for all charges is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30.
