Minot man sentenced with criminal mischief for bank break-in
A Minot man has been sentenced to serve 43 days of a 10 year sentence after pleading guilty to smashing a glass pane to enter a bank after hours in March.
Dezmon Ian Andres, 18, Minot, entered a change of plea of guilty in North Central District Court on Thursday as a part of a plea agreement with Ward County prosecutors. Andres pleaded guilty to one count of criminal mischief-willful damage-intentional more than $10,000, a Class B felony, while a Class A misdemeanor count of criminal trespass-entered or remained in an enclosed place was dismissed in accordance with the plea agreement.
According to court documents, Minot Police officers were dispatched to a bank on south Broadway in Minot at 2:30 a.m. on March 24 after Minot Central Dispatch received multiple commercial burglary alarms. Responding officers arrived on scene, and saw a glass pane had been smashed out and a large rock laying just inside the broken door.
The keyholder for the building was contacted, who accessed the building’s security footage system, which located an individual on the second floor. An officer entered the building and made contact with the male, who was identified as Andres. Andres told the officer he was just trying to find a place to sleep, according to court documents.
The damage to the glass door, as well as two damaged windows on the south side of the building were estimated to cost $175,000 in total. Andres was placed under arrest.
Judge Todd Cresap sentenced Andres to 10 years with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, to first serve 43 days with credit for 43 days served. Andres was ordered to complete three years of supervised probation, and was barred from contacting anyone with or entering the property.
Andress was assessed $775 in court fines and fees. Restitution for the victim was reserved for 90 days.
