WHITE SHIELD – The Ralph Wells Community Center in White Shield was the scene of “Culture’D Couture,” a special event and a first for Fort Berthold Reservation, presented by Bonnie Good Bird to bring tribal fashion to the global stage.

The April 5 event started with a fashion show and models, along with a vendor and market venue. It also is an opportunity for local designers to show their work.

Good Bird, of Mandaree, said this was how tribes are selling, trading, sporting regalia that was couture.

Good Bird began the event with a small group of local seamstresses who make ribbon skirts, shawls, shirts and other items.

Rochelle Wells, designer and owner of Roots, ran the lights and kept sales going on her creative T- shirts, skirts, shawls and similar items.

“I was going back and forth on starting a T-shirt business. But I just decided to do what I love and began playing with color and mixing with my culture and I found my way,” Wells said. She encouraged people to get back to the way that makes them happy – find their “Roots.”

Mauryce Demarce, a White Shield student who recently modeled in Paris Fashion Week, said, “I had a great time – loved all the new outfits. I loved that they were made by local designers.”

Good Bird said she is working on putting on another show on Fort Berthold Reservation.
