County proposes alcohol ordinance revisions
Proposed revisions to the Ward County alcohol licensing ordinance could create new opportunities for bar operators.
The Ward County Commission approved changes on first reading and will be scheduling a public hearing prior to a final reading.
One revision adds bar and grill operations to restaurant licenses. It would allow individuals younger than 21 to enter the restaurant/bar and grill in accordance with state law. The licensed premises also would need to be authorized by the township.
The county commission is proposing the ordinance change following a request from the Hunter’s Den in Foxholm for a license type that would allow the bar to open its food and beverage service to families, much like a supper club. State law includes a provision for bars in communities smaller than 1,500 population to provide food service with fewer restrictions than a traditional supper club.
A second proposed revision would allow establishments licensed by political subdivisions, such as cities or townships, to transfer those licenses to serve special events in the county’s jurisdiction. Currently, only county license holders can transfer to special events in the county. The license holder would need transfer permission from both the county commission and the political subdivision that granted its license.
The commission agreed to look at the proposal related to special events due to inquiries that have been made, but commissioners also noted their concerns about allowing the temporary license transfers by establishments not vetted by the county.
The commission indicated its intent with the special events revision is to take input from the public to determine the value or need for the change.
