Drivers urged to follow Move Over Law
BISMARCK– The North Dakota Department of Transportation and the North Dakota Highway Patrol have announced a reminder to drivers to follow the state’s expanded Move Over Law.
According to a release from the Vision Zero initiative, the Move Over Law was designed to prevent crashes and save lives on North Dakota highways. The law requires drivers on multi-lane highways and interstates outside city limits to move over or slow down when approaching any stopped vehicle displaying flashing hazard warning lights, which includes amber, blue, white or red lights.
Originally enacted to protect emergency vehicles, tow trucks and DOT vehicles, the law was expanded in 2023 to include all motor vehicles with flashing hazard lights. Whether it’s a family with a flat tire or maintenance crew working roadside, the expanded law ensures their safety.
“Every roadside stop is a potential tragedy waiting to happen,” said Lt. Jenna Clawson Huibregtse of the NDHP. “This law isn’t just about compliance — it’s about caring for fellow North Dakotans. We’re asking drivers to stay alert, slow down and move over. A few seconds of caution can save a life.”
Violating the Move Over Law can result in a $50 fine and two points on a driver’s license.
