District 40 appoints former legislator to fill vacancy
District 40 Republicans have appointed former legislator Clara Sue Price to fill the remaining months in the term of the late Rep. Randy Schobinger, who died following a battle with cancer on Aug. 13.
“Clara Sue was the best choice for this because of her experience, not only in our district but in state politics,” District 40 Republican Chairman Jay Lundeen said Friday.
Price will serve until Nov. 30, after which time newly elected legislators will take office. The Legislature is not scheduled to be in session until December and Price will not have interim committee commitments to fill. However, the district is required to fill the seat, and Price has the knowledge to step in should an unexpected need arise.
“If she had to make a decision for the people of District 40, we are confident she would make a great decision,” Lundeen said.
Price served in the North Dakota House of Representatives from 1991-2008. She was caucus leader in her second term and later became vice chairman of the House Human Services Committee. She chaired the Human Services Committee from 1997-2008. She also has been active in the community in a variety of capacities. She and her husband operated cabinetry and gardening businesses.
Price said she is not taking any benefits afforded to legislators for her short time in the office but is happy to assist the district by filling a vacancy that needs to be filled.
Republicans Rep. Matthew Ruby and Macy Bolinske and Democrat Alexandra Deufel, all of Minot, are on the Nov. 5 ballot for the two District 40 House seats.
