Traffic stop leads to stand off in Minot

A traffic stop in southwest Minot led to a standoff on Saturday.

According to the Minot Police Department, at 7:35, p.m. a Minot Police officer conducted a traffic stop on Highway 2/52 near the 16th Street Southwest exit. When the officer made contact with the male driver, the male brandished a handgun and made a threatening comment.

In response, the officer took cover at his patrol vehicle and attempted to communicate with the male but the male would not respond to the officer’s attempts to communicate. Members of the SWAT team also responded to the scene.

After about 30 minutes, the male sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound with the firearm he brandished earlier. Officers approached and rendered aid. The male was subsequently transported by ambulance where he was later pronounced dead.

The incident was being treated as a suicide, according to Minot Police.

Police representatives said an investigation is ongoing.
