Sawyer church to host 9/11 memorial service
SAWYER – St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Sawyer will host a Patriot Day memorial service on Wednesday, Sept. 11, with a meal at 6 p.m. and service at 7 p.m. at the church.
The service is in memory of the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., and United Flight 93. Four passenger planes were hijacked, and two were used to attack the World Trade Center and one struck the Pentagon. The fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania before reaching its target.
Karen Kramer, a member of the church, wanted to “remember all the people that gave their lives – firemen, police, locals – and the military, of course, who have been fighting ever since.”
Kramer was working near the site of the United Flight 93 crash on the day it happened. She remembers her son silencing her as he turned up the radio, which was broadcasting news about the attacks. She recalled businesses in the area shutting down as she kept working, and the country was in shock. Kramer said she wanted to remind the community of the attack on the nation.
Pastor Timothy Stout, minister at St. Peter’s and a member of the Army National Guard Chaplain Corps, coordinated the event with the Sawyer city office, according to Kramer.
Food to be served at the 6 p.m. dinner will include hot dogs, sloppy joes and cookout-style sides and drinks, followed by the short service led by Stout.
