Nonprofit seeks hot food donations

A new local nonprofit is seeking donations from local restaurants to provide food to Minot residents in need.

My Father’s Table Inc. (MFT) was created in light of an amendment to the good Samaritan law in the North Dakota Century Code, which allows the distribution or donation of “apparently wholesome” or “apparently fit” food and grocery products before they are thrown away. Many grocery stores already donated grocery products to local soup kitchens, but before the recent amendment there were barriers to donating “hot” food due to liability concerns.

MFT is the 18th partner in the Food Rescue Hero Network, and coordinates food rescues and reporting with area restaurants, schools, nursing homes, hospitals, C-stores, hotels and catering businesses. Safety protocols will be in place to mark the time of pick up and delivery of food by volunteers to help ensure the safe preservation and delivery of the food.

My Father’s Table Inc. received a start-up grant of $5,000 from Souris River Telecommunications and the Foundation for Rural Service.
