Cemetery expansion planned at Rosehill
Rosehill Memorial Park is looking to expand its capacity. Superintendent Rod Roteliuk said the cemetery is in the process of adding space to its columbarium and also plans to add sections for cemetery plots.
Speaking during a virtual community engagement discussion Wednesday, Roteliuk said the columbarium that opened in 2016 for holding urns already is three-quarters full.
He said an expansion is planned next year.
“We’re also in the process of doing some landscaping and some prep work and engineering planning to open a couple of new sections within the next few years,” he said in reference to new burial space. “Without being crowded, people will have all the choices that they need for the next many years.”
Current projects include maintenance on the bell tower, which has been in the cemetery since the 1970s with little updating, Rotelliuk said. Another project has been spraying for weeds.
“This was one of the most challenging years because the weeds were more rapid than they have been in a number of years and the weather was not very cooperative,” he said.
The use of chemicals before Memorial Day is limited due to the need to avoid damage to flowers and other grave decorations, he said. The wind also prevented spraying earlier in the season because of the potential for damaging trees and bushes. For the last few weeks, cemetery crews have been working to get weeds under control, he said.
