Second arrest and new charges for downtown shooting
The two men arrested in connection with a June 23 shooting that injured two people in downtown Minot made initial appearances in North Central District Court on Friday.
Jamonie Evan Davis, 19, Minot, was arrested on Thursday for his involvement in the shooting after being identified by witnesses and investigators reviewing social media videos of the incident, according to court documents.
Davis has been charged with three Class C felony counts for reckless endangerment-extreme indifference-dangerous weapon, aggravated assault-dangerous weapon, and tampering with physical evidence-felony. Davis was also charged with a count of refusal to halt, a Class B misdemeanor, after fleeing Minot Police officers attempting to arrest him near Sixth Street Southwest on Thursday.
Davis made his initial appearance by ITV from the Ward County Jail on Friday before Judge Gary Lee. Ward County Assistant State’s Attorney Christopher Nelson asked Lee for a $100,000 cash or surety bond, saying Davis had confessed to his role in the shooting, and was wanted for failing to appear for pretrial conference in November 2023 for a different case in which he is charged with domestic violence, a Class C felony. Davis faces a Class A misdemeanor charge for violating a judicial order from the domestic violence case after allegedly contacting the victim.
“We have no faith the defendant will report since we haven’t seen him in nearly a year. Now we’ve also got the felony charges from the shooting. The defendant made statements to law enforcement where he admitted to the shooting, so we’ve got a confession. We have a very strong case,” Nelson said.
Nelson also asked for no-contact orders and distance provisions for the victims in both cases. Davis asked the court for a lower bond, but Lee ruled the state’s bond request was in order. Lee advised Davis to include all four of his cases in his application for a court-appointed attorney, and moved for the domestic violence case to be made ready for a jury trial before Judge Douglas Mattson.
Laquint Tydelle Sarvis, 23, was previously charged with two Class C felonies in connection with the shooting, one count of reckless endangerment-extreme indifference with a dangerous weapon, and a count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
Sarvis appeared via ITV on Friday after Davis’ hearing for an initial appearance on two new charges connected to the shooting, for a Class B felony count of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon causing permanent loss or impairment, and a count of Class C felony aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon. The Class B felony carries a mandatory minimum of four years with the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Sarvis’s court-appointed attorney asked the $100,000 bond and conditions previously imposed remain the same, saying he has never seen a reduction to bond after new charges are added but asked that they revisit the issue at his client’s preliminary hearing on Thursday, Aug. 1. Lee and Nelson agreed.
