Spills occur at two area well sites

BISMARCK – An equipment failure and a tank overflow caused spills at well sites in Divide and McKenzie counties this week.

About 12,600 gallons of produced water were released due to an equipment failure at a well location about four miles east of Stady, in Divide County.

Prima Exploration, Inc., reported the incident at the Smoky Butte 2 SWD well location to the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division on Friday.

The products were contained on location and cleanup is underway. At the time of reporting, 10,920 gallons of produced water had been recovered.

On Tuesday, about 52,458 gallons of oil were released due to a tank overflow at a well location about seven miles east of Johnson’s Corner in McKenzie County.

The N.D.Oil and Gas Division was notified on Wednesday by Arrow Water, LLC., about the incident at the Ella SWD 1 well. The product was contained on location and cleanup was underway. At the time of reporting, 43,764 gallons of oil had been recovered.

A state inspector has been to both locations and will monitor any additional cleanup required.
