County board rejects alcohol license request
A county ordinance limiting the number of liquor licenses based on population led the Ward County Commission to reject a license request in Eureka Township Tuesday.
At a meeting last month, the commission received two license applications within Eureka Township that had approval from the township board. The license request from Board Meeting LLC was approved and the request for Lopez Boxing Gym Inc. was held for further clarification.
Commissioners initially had been unaware of the county’s population restrictions on licenses and had raised concern about that lack before approving one license and keeping the other request active. A county resolution then came to light that restricts the number of licenses to one per each 750 population increment. Eureka Township’s population is 415, limiting the number of licenses to one.
On Tuesday, the commission rejected the Lopez request. The commission ruled the Board Meeting LLC license already had been in effect for two weeks, and the license is for an establishment, located at 403 77nd Ave. NE. The Lopez request was for a license to be used for special events, and commissioners indicated special events can be accommodated through temporary license transfers.
