Minot’s population declines in estimates

Minot’s latest population estimate is 47,373 residents in new data released by the U.S. Census Bureau today. The new count reflects estimated population as of July 2023.

The 2023 estimate reflects a drop from 47,689 residents in the previous year and a decline from the official census of 48,377. Burlington and Surrey, however, both are projected to be growing over the past few years.

Williston and Watford City are considered in census figures to be growing again after a decline just after the 2020 census. The state’s largest growth continues to be in urban areas, with Bismarck, Fargo and West Fargo seeing steady gains. Grand Forks, which remains lower in the estimates than the 2020 census, saw an increase from 2022 to 2023 in the estimates.

Among communities with gains from 2022, and their 2023 estimates, are: Fargo, 133,188; Bismarck, 75,092; Grand Forks, 58,921; West Fargo, 40,400; Williston, 27,706; Watford City, 6,020; New Town, 2,725; Stanley, 2,184; Burlington, 2,171; Surrey, 1,417; and Mohall, 689.
