Father, son celebrate graduation from MSU

Kylie Koontz/MDN Braeden Volk, left, and his father, Garrett Volk, will be graduating from Minot State University and walking in the commencement ceremony today.

Sherwood locals Garrett and Braeden Volk are a father and son pair who will be walking today at the Minot State University commencement ceremony.

Garrett Volk made the decision to go back to school for his master’s degree after 20 years, just as his son, Braeden, was finishing up his bachelor’s degree from Minot State University.

“I graduated from MSU in 2001 with my undergraduate degree,” Garrett Volk said. “One of my professors at the time wanted me to come back for my master’s and I never did, with family and kids and everything, but 20 some years later I decided to come back to get my master’s in information systems management.”

Getting his master’s was always in the cards; it was just a matter of when.

“Getting a master’s degree was a bucket list item for me,” Garrett Volk said. “I didn’t necessarily need it for my career, but I could in the future, and learning, in general, is really important to me, so it was something I knew I was going to do.”

Braeden Volk decided to attend MSU after realizing it could be the perfect environment for him.

“I decided on MSU because it is close to home and I can see my siblings on the weekends while working toward my bachelor’s in business management, coaching minor and marketing concentration, and I also got the opportunity to be a recruiter and videographer for the football team here,” Braeden Volk said. “Even though I was close to home, I was still able to venture out because MSU is such a diverse community and really turned into a second home for me.”

While the father-son pair never had any crossover in terms of their respective degrees, learning together still offered them a sort of bonding experience through the day-to-day struggles of being a student.

“Since I haven’t been in a college setting since 2001, I had to relearn some things,” Garrett Volk said. “I’m not a big fan of writing papers, so every once in a while I’d complain to him about Blackboard glitches or APA style formatting, small things like that,” he said.

While Garrett Volk was reintroduced to being a student, Braeden was finishing up his four-year undergraduate degree.

“Being in school for most of your life can get draining, so I’d talk to him about being ready to be done, and it was nice to have someone to not necessarily complain to, but just talk about the stresses of school with,” Braeden Volk said. “I remember in the beginning, since he is an older generation coming back into a college setting, he’d ask about APA formatting and little stuff like that, that I could help out with, whereas anything tech-related, he is my go-to. I don’t know anything about that stuff so I can learn a lot from him in that sense.”

After learning and relearning together, the pair said it felt as if it was over in an instant, and now it’s time to celebrate.

“We will both walk on May 10, so most of our family will be there,” Garrett Volk said.

“My mom, siblings, grandparents, basically anyone who can make it will be there,” Braeden added.

Initially, the father-son duo did not plan on graduating at the same time and only realized the possibility to do so as they were preparing for their last year.

“I had asked Braeden when he’d graduate, and he wasn’t too sure since he was working on a few degrees, and I told him I’ll walk in 2024,” Garrett Volk said.

“For my last semester I realized, ‘Hey, I can make this work,’ so even though it wasn’t intentional, I definitely was able to set it up a bit,” Braeden Volk said. “I wanted to make it work so I could walk with my dad.”
