Vehicle crashes in construction zone on bridge in Bismarck

BISMARCK – A vehicle crashed and overturned in a construction zone on the Grant Marsh Bridge in Bismarck Monday.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, about 8:15 a.m., a 2013 Ford Expedition, driven by Debra Gronlie-Andahl, 69, Bismarck, was traveling east across the bridge when a vehicle ahead of the Expedition slowed suddenly. Gronlie-Andahl applied the Expedition’s brakes and steered to the right, striking the orange barrels protecting people from striking the bridge rail. About six barrels were damaged. The Expedition also struck the bridge rail, overturned onto its roof and slid on the roadway.

The construction zone is a complete lane closure with two-way traffic in the eastbound lane.

The Expedition was struck from behind by an eastbound 2013 Lincoln SUV, driven by Claire Schnaible, 21, Bismarck, as it overturned. A 2024 Nissan Armada, driven by Louis Martinez, 63, Houston, Texas, was in the oncoming lane and contacted the Expedition. There was minor damage to the Lincoln and the Nissan.

All occupants were wearing seat belts. There were no injuries. The Expedition’s airbags deployed.

Interstate 94 in both directions at the bridge was closed for about an hour, reopening at 9:15 a.m.

The Highway Patrol reminds motorists to slow down, be mindful of following distance, stay alert and watch for workers.
