Register for Farm Safety Camp in Minot

Registrations are being accepted for Farm Safety Camp-West, to be held Tuesday through Thursday, May 21-23, in Minot.

The camp is an overnight, hands-on, workforce safety skill development program designed for youth ages 13-16 years old who plan to work for a farmer/rancher, either on their own farm or for a non-family-related operator.

Participants will learn safe tractor operation, including a tractor driving obstacle course, livestock handling, ATV certification through North Dakota Parks and Recreation, rules of the road, farm machinery operation, farm first-aid, including official Stop the Bleed certification, agricultural youth laws and equipment operation and maintenance.

Participants who pass the program will receive official certification to operate tractors of more than 20 horsepower and some pieces of farm machinery when working for a non-relative farmer or rancher. This certification is encouraged but not required for youth to work on their own family farms. This certification is required by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Hazardous Occupations Order in Agriculture for 14-15-year-olds and meets all requirement standards. Participants who are 13 years old, and successfully complete the program, will receive their certificate on their 14th birthdays.

The Parent Leadership in Action event is on May 23 at 3 pm, followed by a graduation ceremony.

The registration fee of $300 includes lodging and meals for each camp as well as personal protective equipment items for participants to keep and use when working on the farm/ranch. Peterson Farms Seed is offering scholarships to farm families that use its seed brand.

Contact the NDSU Extension Ward County for registration and scholarship information.

Requests for accommodations related to disability should be made to the event contact person at least two weeks in advance of the event.
