Minnewaukan man sentenced for assault, brandishing

FARGO — A Minnewaukan man was sentenced in U.S. District Court on Wednesday for assaulting with a dangerous weapon and brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.

Dantae Jerome Whitetail, 21, Minnewaukan, appeared before Chief Judge Peter Welte sentenced Whitetail to a year for the assault charge and a consecutive four years for the brandishing charge. U.S. Attorney Mac Schneider said in a news release Whitetail will be required to complete three years of supervised probation upon release and must pay $200 in special assessments. The sentence was delivered following the entry of a guilty plea by Whitetail for his role in a May 21, 2022, incident in St. Michael.

This is Whitetail’s latest conviction in federal court stemming from the incident, following the conviction of Nathaniel Azure, 21, after a seven-day jury trial, and of Michael Al-Jerome Denne, 25, and Skyla Kay Cavanaugh, 23, St. Michael.

“This sentence is a just result that will benefit public safety in Indian Country,”

Schneider said. “The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of North Dakota is committed to working with our law enforcement partners to combat violent crime in tribal communities.”
