Local contractor gives back to Minot

Wayne Bontrager, the owner of Flying B Construction, wanted to give back to the Minot community and spark others to look out for their fellow neighbors by giving away a roof to a nominated winner.

Bontrager wanted to show his appreciation for how the community has supported his business so six years ago he decided to do the now annual roof giveaway.

Some people may have houses that were affected by inclement weather or the roof is just giving out due to age. Putting a new roof on a house can be quite costly. Bontrager wanted to help how he could and offers to replace someone’s roof for no charge once a year.

The one who wins the roof giveaway must be nominated by someone else on Flying B’s website. The last day to nominate a candidate is Sunday, March 31, and the winner will be announced on Monday, April 15.

Bontrager said around 183 candidates were nominated last year. He goes through each candidate and evaluates all of the roofs that belong to the nominees, then decides who needs the roof the most.

He said he likes to leave the name of the winner a surprise until they are told personally by him and the person who nominated them.

The roof that he gives away is usually made from steel, unless the winner would much rather have a shingled roof. He and his trained crew do all the work.

The winner will also have the freedom to choose the color of their new roofing. Pioneer Metal Sales, of Karlsruhe, is usually the distributor that Bontrager gets his steel from, along with some of his underlayment that is purchased in bulk. He tries to get all of his materials from local stores.

“I have been really blessed in what I do and for me, it’s a way to reach back out,” Bontrager said.
