Jury selection was held in North Central District Court in Minot on Monday in the Class AA murder trial for a Fargo man accused of shooting another man to death at a Minot hotel in January 2023.
Darrion Deshon Jackson, 33, Fargo, was arrested and charged by Minot Police with the murder of Timothy Chrishaod Smith, 38. Two rounds of interviews were scheduled Monday for nearly 100 prospective jurors at the Ward County Courthouse.
According to court documents, the shooting incident was precipitated by an exchange of words between the two men after Smith tried to enter a hotel room Jackson was visiting the night of Jan. 30, 2023. Jackson also faces a Class C felony charge of unlawful possession of firearm-felon or violent misdemeanor in addition to the AA murder charge.
Jackson has been held since his arrest at the Ward County Jail on a $2 million cash or corporate surety bond.
The road to Jackson's trial was extended several times during the proceedings due to the withdrawal of a public defender, a pause to determine his fitness to proceed and separate felony indictments stemming from his alleged role in a jailhouse assault in May 2023. The final date for the jury trial was set following a restoration conference in October of last year.
Jackson's trial is scheduled to run until Friday, March 22.
Jackson is set for another jury trial on Tuesday, April 9, for the jailhouse assault.
