Air rifle teams successful at matches

Kiley Whillock shoots standing precision during the Northwest District Air Rifle Match.

Ward County 4-H Shooting Sports recently hosted the Northwest District Air Rifle Match.

The contest, held Feb. 10 at the North Dakota State Fairground in Minot, hosted youth from five counties with 28 participants, with 13 of these participants were from Ward County. Ward County also participated in the Ramsey County hybrid match in Devils Lake, which offered in-person and postal entries. Postal entries are when the participants mail their targets to the host county.

Categories are by age to include Beginner (ages eight-10), Junior (11-13), and Senior (14-18). The equipment used is Sporter air rifles, shooting .177-caliber pellets at a velocity of 600 fps or less. Targets are AR 5/10 International 10-meter air rifle targets. Beginners shoot from a sitting position off a bench rest. Juniors and Seniors compete, shooting from three positions: standing, kneeling and prone. The match also offered a standing division, completing six rounds in the standing position. The Northwest match offered a Continuing Growth category for youth in Junior or Senior age groups who shoot off the bench.
