A Ward County Jail inmate has been sentenced after entering a change of plea to guilty for his role in a jailhouse assault last year.
Sompohi Nmn Guy, 22, Minot, entered his change of plea in North Central District Court on Monday to the charges of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, both Class C felonies. A third Class C felony count of conspiracy to commit aggravated assault was dismissed.
Guy was being held awaiting sentencing on a Class B felony robbery conviction from last March when he was charged as an accomplice in the May 24, 2023, incident in which jail staff accused him and co-defendant Darrion Jackson of assaulting their two podmates at the Ward County Jail. Jackson was in custody on a Class AA felony murder charge at the time for an incident that occurred at a North Minot motel in January 2023.
According to court documents the two victims were transported to the Trinity Emergency Room for evaluation and treatment for bone fractures in one victim's face and for bruises and cuts.
District Court Judge Todd Cresap sentenced Guy to a concurrent sentence of five years in the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, to first serve three years with credit for 174 days already served. Guy will be required to complete three years of supervised probation upon release and complete an anger management course. He must also abide by a no-contact order for both victims. Guy was assessed $525 in court fines and fees, and restitution has been reserved pending a potential hearing at a later date.
Jackson is scheduled for a three-day jury trial beginning April 9 for the assault. Jackson's jury trial for the 2023 murder of Timothy Chrishoad Smith is scheduled to begin March 11 and run through March 22.
